1737-1739 Foggini

Giovanni Battista Foggini (Florence 1652-1725), Giulio Foggini (17th-18th centuries) and Pier Francesco Foggini (Florence 1713 - Rome 1783), Galileo's tomb, 1737-1739, Florence, Santa Croce Church.

Giovanni Battista Foggini (Florence 1652-1725), Giulio Foggini (17th-18th centuries) et Pier Francesco Foggini (Florence 1713 - Rome 1783), La tombe de Galilée, 1737-1739, Florence, Église Santa Croce.

This monument was erected by means of a funeral bequest from Vincenzo Viviani (Florence, 1622 - 1703). It was designed and built by the Foggini dynasty of sculptors and architects: Giovanni Battista (Florence 1652-1725), Giulio (17th-18th centuries) and Pier Francesco (Florence 1713 - Rome 1783). In the 19th century Giuseppe Calendi published this engraving after Giovanni Battista's drawings.

« The sepulcrum was completed in 1739. The remains of Galileo were moved to this spot on 12 March 1737, the date on which the index finger of his right hand was removed. Before that time the mortal remains of the great scientist were kept "in storage" in the same church in the Cappella del Noviziato, which is also known as the Capella dei Santi Cosma e Damiano. The reason that Galileo was not buried with full ceremony in the main body of the church at the time of his death was the condemnation that he received at the hands of the ecclesiastical authorities in 1633. »
