The life of Ptolemy is so obscure
that authors do not agree on his dates and name, the same as
of the Egyptian Dynasty of Kings. He is mainly known by his
work, written in the 2nd century A.D., which established the
basis of "geocentric" astronomy and "Ptolemaic" geography,
conceptions of the universe and of the Earth which lasted
until the Copernician revolution in the 16th century. He was
an astronomer, mathemathician and geographer. His portrait is as obscure as his
life. This website is dedicated to put a face on the man,
and to see how centuries did so. Contributions are
sollicited from scholars to identify and study these
portraits. The first step will be to gather
basic informations and a catalogue raisonné of his
portraits. When these are properly identified and dated, we
will then be able to begin their iconography and iconology
analysis as per Erwin Panofsky's methods.
Quand ils
seront identifiés et datés nous pourrons alors
entreprendre leur analyse iconographique et iconologique
selon les méthodes du système d'Erwin
Panofsky.
