He studied at the Cleveland School of Art, and he taught at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis from 1938 until the early 1980s. Cette représentation de Marquette n'est pas sans rappeller celle de 1904 Dallin : tête basculée vers l'arrière, croix levée très haut, le tout fortement tendu vers le ciel avec, ici en plus, le double motif de la petite croix sur la grande.
