1980 Imagerie dévote de béatification par John Steele.

Ce portrait est attribué par le Kateri Center à John Steele. Un artiste homonyme (1934-1992), « A native Californian, was raised on a ranch where he learned to sketch and paint » ; il s'est spécialisé dans la peinture d'autochtones et de cowboys. Bien que le paysage avec la croix reprenne la composition de l'oeuvre de Nealis, son modèle serait l'archéologue et actrice autochtone Bertha Parker Pallan Thurston Cody (1907-1978), de descendance Abenaki et Seneca, qui vécut en Californie et au Nevada.

« During the 1930s Margaret, Beulah, and Bertha [Bertha Parker Pallan Thurston Cody (1907-1978)] were among a growing group of educated Indians who built connections between Native Californian communities and the Hollywood Indian community in Los Angeles, where actors from different tribes across the country struggled to survive in a fantasy land far from home. A few years after Thurston's death, Bertha reconnected with an old friend from Hollywood, the famous actor Iron Eyes Cody, born Espera Oscar de Corti (1904-99). They had met years earlier when she was a teenager, and she finally agreed to marry him in August 1936. [...] By 1949 the Indian colony in Hollywood had diminished from "several thousand" to only about sixty people, "all of whom work constantly in movies," and competition was fierce. Since her ethnic beauty was a desirable commodity, Bertha went back into acting, and also posed for painters. In one instance, she posed for John Steele, for a painting of Kateri Tekakwitha (a seventeenth-century Mohawk convert) that still apprears on Catholic prayer cards today [Bruchac 2018, p. 108-109]. »

Cette image dévote porte, au verso, la mention « Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha [...] Beatified by Pope John Paul II, June 22, 1980 », telle que publiée sur le rabat de l'édition spéciale suédoise de Beautiful Losers de Leonard Cohen. Elle est vendue par le Kateri Center depuis mars 1981 (en couleurs, 4"x3" à 0,10$, 6"1/2x5" à 0,25$, 24"1/2x18"1/2 à 4$, soit une valeur respective de 0,28$, 0,70$ et 11,24$ en 2020 ; Kateri 1981.03-E127, p. 02 ; Kateri 1981.03-F084, p. 02) et elle l'est encore (web).

Ce portrait a donc vraisemblablement été peint à l'occasion de la béatification, soit 2 ans après le décès du modèle présumé, Bertha Parker Pallan Thurston Cody (1907-1978), à l'âge de 71 ans ! Il représente pourtant une femme nettement plus jeune. D'après la citation ci-dessus, Bertha aurait servi de modèle vers 1949, soit à l'âge de 42 ans, ce qui est déjà plus vieux que l'âge apparent sur ce portrait ! Né en 1934, Steele n'avait alors que 15 ans ! Il a donc forcément utilisé, vers 1980, une photographie ancienne de son modèle.

Tom Egan, Shrine Director - admires the beautiful John Steele painting of the Holy Father and two Indian children at a reception for Iron Eyes in Mr. Constantino's home. Later Iron Eyes visited the National Kateri Center.

LM 1998.09-12 — (p3) • As he writes these lines, your correspondent is wearing a Kateri watch! It was made by a lady in California, unknown to me, at the request of a lady in Johnson City, NY, who is verγ devoted to Blessed Kateri. The face of the watch has only three numbers - 3, 6, and 9 - which in no way obscure the face of Kateri. It is the John Steele portrait of her, which is the favorite of many people. I have no idea how many other people are sporting such a watch, but I'm wearing mine with great satisfaction. Hope many people will ask me what time it is!
